Tollgate at White Bridge, Brunswick Road, west of Eagle Mills

Old Tollgate at White Bridge, Brunswick Road, west of Eagle Mills, about 1870. Brunswick Road was once known as the Pittstown Turnpike, and a covered bridge and tollgate stood where the road crossed the Poestenkill. In the 19th century it was not uncommon for a road or section of a road to be "owned" by a private company that collected tolls to pay for road maintenance. This scene looks east toward Shippey Lane.
New Responsibility for maintenance of Brunswick Road, or Route 2, now falls to the NYSDOT. The covered bridge was lost in a flood in 1892, and was later replaced by a bridge that was painted white, giving this location the name "White Bridge". The tollgate keeper's home still stands, but is blocked in this picture by trees.
