Elections
The 2008 New York State presidential primary took place on February 5. The Primary Election is September 9, 2008. General Election is Tuesday, November 4, 2008.
To register to vote in New York State You Must:
- be a U.S. citizen;
- be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form
(note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or
other election in which you want to vote);
- live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
- not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction and;
- not claim the right to vote elsewhere.
How to Register
- You can register in person at the Rensselaer County Board of Elections
- or at any New York State Agency-Based
voter registration center
- You can enter
your name directly into the New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE)

- You can call NYSBOE's 1-800-FOR-VOTE (367-8683) hotline to request a
voter application

2008 Registration Dates1
- Primary Election
- Mail Registration - Applications must be postmarked not
later than September 2 to be eligible to vote in the Primary Election.
- In Person Registration - You may register at your local
board of elections or any state agency participating in the National
Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but,
to be eligible to vote in the Fall primary, your application must be
received no later than September 8.
- Change of Address - Notices of change of address from registered
voters received by August 20 by a county board of elections must
be processed and entered in the records in time for the primary.
- General Election
- Mail Registration - Applications must be postmarked not later
than October 28 to be eligible to vote in the General Election.
- In Person Registration - You may register at your local board
of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration
Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote
in the November general election, your application must be received no
later than October 10th except, if you have been honorably discharged from
the military or have become a naturalized citizen since October 10th, you
may register in person at the board of elections up until November 3.
- Change of Address - Notices of change of address from registered
voters received by October 15 by a county board of elections must be
processed and entered in the records in time for the general election.
